Mergo for Google Chat: appearance, features, and deactivation

Understanding the presence of Mergo in Google Chat

Some Google Workspace users notice the appearance of Mergo in the Applications section of Google Chat, even though they have not modified their configuration.

This page explains why this application appears, what it is intended for, and how to disable it if needed.

Why does Mergo appear in Google Chat?

Google now offers the ability to integrate third-party applications directly into Google Chat via bots or Chat apps. As part of this, Mergo has been declared as a Chat-compatible application.

Concretely:

  • Google has made a technical integration available that allows Mergo to be used within Chat.
  • This availability does not require any action from users for the corresponding icon to appear in the Chat applications list (depending on your domain settings).
  • You may therefore see Mergo listed as an application in the Google Chat interface, even if you are not currently using it in this form.

This does not represent a configuration change made without your knowledge, but rather the availability of a new integration option within Google Workspace.

Planned features in Google Chat

The integration with Google Chat is in an exploratory phase. At this stage:

  • No advanced features are yet offered directly to end users within Chat.
  • The application may appear in the list without any available commands or full interactions.

The medium-term goal is to enable, for example:

  • contextual help on how to use Mergo via a conversational assistant,
  • triggering certain operations (e.g., launching or monitoring actions related to your campaigns, depending on future developments),
  • answering frequently asked questions directly from Google Chat, without needing to open another interface.

These scenarios are being studied and evaluated. The exact capabilities and roadmap may evolve and will be documented when they are officially available.

Impact on your organization

The mere fact that Mergo appears in Google Chat does not automatically imply a major change in your existing workflows. As long as the integration is not fully deployed:

  • users may see the application in the list,
  • but usage remains limited and mainly intended for controlled testing or experimentation.

You retain full control at any time to activate or deactivate this application in your domain.

How to disable Mergo in Google Chat from the Admin Console

If you do not want Mergo to be visible or usable in Google Chat for your users, you can manage this integration from the Google Workspace Admin Console.

Indicative steps (the exact menu names may vary slightly depending on versions):

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin Console with an account that has the required permissions (usually a super admin).
  2. Go to Apps > Google Workspace > Google Chat (or the equivalent Chat management section).
  3. Open the section for managing applications for Google Chat (for example, “Manage Chat apps,” “Connected apps,” etc.).
  4. In the list of available applications, search for Mergo.

Click the application, then use the available options to:

    • disable Mergo for the entire domain, or
    • limit it only to certain organizational units or groups, depending on your internal policy.

If you do not see these exact menus, consult the official Google Workspace documentation on managing Google Chat applications or contact your internal Google Workspace support team to adjust access rights.

Monitor Mergo updates

Since new Chat features may be added, it is recommended to regularly check release notes or official announcements to decide whether a (re)activation is relevant.
